How will the second-most populous country in the world manage smart mobility?

India is one of the fastest-growing economies worldwide. With around 1.37 billion inhabitants, the matter of mobility becomes a crucial issue in India. In fact, India is dealing with an immense amount of traffic every day. How does the country approach this subject and how could Switzerland contribute?

Focus India 2020 is truly engaged in understanding the efficient transformation of mobility in India and the necessity of adapting to dynamic markets alongside learning more about the importance of health care access to the Indian population.

Currently, India is taking crucial measures to adapt to the dynamic smart mobility market in order to overcome challenges with particulate pollution, traffic congestion and subsequent health issues. In fact, the country aims to have an all-electric car fleet by 2030 and no vehicle with a combustion engine should be registered in the country by then. In order to reach this goal, several Swiss and international companies in the mobility sector are investing in the Indian market to provide solutions.

India’s momentous adaptation to the e-mobility market also brings valuable opportunities for Swiss companies to invest and grow. For instance, our long-standing partner, Blaser Swisslube AG who produces high-value lubricants for the mobility sector is becoming increasingly known in India for their quality products. In fact, India holds a huge potential within various industries such as railways, hi-tech manufacturing, renewable energy and cleantech.

Not only is Switzerland one of the leading countries in innovation and environmental performance but also in the cleantech and railway industry. Therefore, Swiss companies can greatly benefit from the potential opportunities. In order to support Swiss SME’s to start a successful business in India, the Embassy of India in Berne has launched the “Momentum in India: Swiss SMEs Program (MISSP)”, a platform for market entry services.

Federal Councillor Sommaruga and Piyush Goyal, Indian Minister of Railways

Moreover, the subjects of energy efficiency along with rail transportation were further addressed during Ms. Simonetta Sommaruga’s working visit to India in October 2019. Alongside visiting various corporations of the energy industry, the Swiss Federal Councillor also met with the Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, the Minister of Civil Aviation and the Minister of Railways. Indeed, India aims to strengthen its railway network by obtaining innovative technologies and a high-quality rolling stock. This goal will be accomplished through electrified railway lines, optimized operations and rail timetables, as well as modernized train stations.

“At a time when nationalism and protectionism are gaining ground in many places, we, by contrast, want to catch the opportunities offered by openness and cooperation” – Simonetta Sommaruga

Due to Switzerland’s considerable know-how in the railway and cleantech industry and India’s untapped potential in these industries, both economies can analyze synergies and thus benefit from complementary opportunities. For example, our valuable platinum partner Accenture, who is also operating in India and Switzerland, can highly contribute to India’s objectives thanks to their tremendous knowledge about high-tech innovation within various industries. Furthermore, Switzerland and India already maintain a good cooperative relationship and recently celebrated their 70th anniversary of the Swiss-Indian Treaty of Friendship. Nonetheless, both countries intend to intensify their cooperation, particularly in the areas of railway and cleantech.

Focus India 2020 is very much looking forward to gain more insight into India’s adaptation to the fast-changing market of smart mobility along with learning more about the Swiss-Indo business relations.
